Website Quick Starter's Guide

Assuming that you are starting from scratch you will need a web template or design.

You can find some really nice designs on the link below or you can design your own or seach Google for a free template. The next thing you will need is a host.
What is a host? a host is a host computer or server that is where your site is placed so every one can come and view your content.
Lets assume you now have a template and a host you will need to transfer your sites content to the host server. I use a free ftp client called core ftp and it is also free.
Ok its all on the server now we need to map it so all your content can be found.
To do this we need to create a XML site map and using a free online site map generator makes this job a breeze.
Don't forget to add your Favicon (thats the little picture that appears in the browser address bar.
Looks like you are almost ready to roll but we need to check for any errors and make sure that noting so far has been missed.
For this I use a handy site called Xinureurns it gives you a load of info about your page take a look!
Quick Start Tweeking
Now that you have run your site through Xinureturns you may see some issues that need some attention:
The aim here is to achieve a 10 on all tests run
The first test is domain Name, we cant do alot about this other than get a new name but we wont worry about that for now.
the next is your title,description and key words anything below 10 you should go to the meta generator and re try either more or less words depending on what the results were.
The rest of the information in not really of any use at this stage but keep a note of it for later reference.
Now that we have a clean bill of health and we know all our meta tags are right we need to start letting people know that we are out here in cyber space.
Google is a good place to start and my first port of call will be my google account if you dont have one Get One.
Log to google and activate google webmasters tools.
Inside webmaster tools you will find an option to add your webpage and site map (keep in mind you will have to verify your site to google) it should take less than 12 hours and your site should be in the google system.
Link Backs are very important to search engines and directorys finding your site so try and use them as much as you can.
Another handy tool for gaining link backs and hard links is an automated hard link script I like the one made by axslinks and it is nice to have other webmasters add there link to your page and it saves you a real lot of work.
As your web page becomes more advanced
You may want to think about adding so extra features such as:
Banner rotator: this is a script that you can place on your web server and it will control your banner adds there are many good rotators out there and many are free and they do a lot of the hard work for you as they can run your whole banner adds on auto pilot.
Top list : A toplist script is a very good way to create traffic into your website and they work very simply by you install the script and then people come and see your list and with any luck they join and the idea is who ever sends you the most traffic gets the best position on the list.
Another very simple but very effective way to create sales from your traffic is lets say for example you are selling from your website dog care products,
I would suggest you make a few small videos of the product and up load them to youtube.com then embed the link into your site as well and let your customers view what they are buying.
There are many free Forum scripts around that even come with self installers, Forum scripts are very good for giving your site new and fresh content as well as helping with sales for example: Customer writes how many times a month should I wash my dog? you answer: What ever the required washings is as I know little about dog hygene but 2 things has happened here.
1. A Customer has got his answer and will be more inclined to deal with a person that replys to questions.
2. A new seach term has been made for you without any work by you, (how many times a month should I wash my dog)
Adding a counter is also a great idea
a counter with stats ie: where the traffic came from where is went and search engine trends can be really handy in letting you know if what you are doing is working or not, if you are link trading and you see and increase you know to keep at what you are doing but if traffic numbers are falling you can change your ideas a little.
Try to avoid Pop Up Adds
Many sites try to use them and they really only chase the surfer away besides most browsers have pop up blockers installed.
